I can sympathise with the Ryan Aldridge over at Swindon as the dreaded swine flu has caused him bother this week too.

With only two D-men (two out with flu and one having broken skates and no spares), Swindon put up quite a battle against the Phoenix this weekend but it was for nought as victory was ours!

As Jim “Tambo” Piper takes over for a week from Ben “Swine flu” Knight, catch amusing predictions, the odd sporting cliché and what is perhaps the last interview Ryan Aldridge will give as a player in this week’s full show.

You can catch Iain Bowie talking about the coming weekend at Rock Radio’s site from Thursday too. That’s an exclusive to them. All mid-week interviews will now be available only from the Rock Radio site. The reason for this is that they are a significant sponsor for the Phoenix and have taken the time and effort to set-up a site devoted to our boys - so it’s the least the podcast could do to point you in their direction. Hits mean successful partnerships! And long may this one continue.

TTFN, y’all!

NOTE: Can I please make clear that no video footage from inside the rink was published/streamed/recorded last night. The only footage to which I made mention was from outside the rink and was solely a video of the podcast being recorded. No Scims were harmed in the making of the video and neither was anybody else.

The video has been taken down now as it was only an experiment. I do NOT in any way condone the recording or streaming of any live game in this or any other league. It harms gates and it harms the future of the game in this country.

Anybody recording/streaming video from the inside of any rink during any game (or even before/after) should expect to be ejected and, most probably, barred.

So, for clarity, the video experiment from last night was ONLY from outside of the rink and included no other persons than the makers of the podcast doing what we do.

In the podcast this week, Ben Knight talks to Jim “Tambo” Piper about the shape of the Phoenix line-up so far and finds out that he has been snooping around our new opponents’ rinks.

“The [Slough] rink is a little smaller than we are used to but it has a bar at the end of it where you can sit and watch the game!”

The excitement was palpable in his voice at this but it wasn’t all about beer.

“Talking to the fans from Slough and Guildford, they are really excited about the Phoenix joining the EPL. They are curious too… They are looking forward to seeing Tony Hand on the ice.”

Of course, it has been a little while now since the EPL fans have seen “The Great One” play in their league and it is no surprise perhaps that it is generating some excitement.

Although it’s a young Phoenix side so far,Tambo is impressed with the abilities of those signed.

“[Jaakko] is not someone who I have seen play but I have met fans over in the Finnish league who have seen him and, if course, you don’t get 200 games in that sort of league unless you can play a little!… I think Luke Boothroyd is going to be one of the best D-men in the EPL. He was tremendous in the last season and I’m sure he will be again… Adam Walker clocked-up impressive numbers in an unremarkable side when he was last in the EPL and he has improved in stature since then.”

All things considered, it looks as though we are ready for what the EPL can throw at us and the EPL are looking forward to meeting us. Will they be so friendly when the Phoenix show them how we do things at the Dome? Let’s just see.

Surprisingly, Jaakko says that the Finnish hockey style is more in keeping with the North American style than people might think.

Naturally, the season in Germany when he picked up more penalty minutes than a left winger might ordinarily was down to the refs.

“Yeah, it was the refs. It was unfair calls every time!”

Despite being most comfortable in his left-wing position, Jaakko prides himself in being able to play wherever he is needed.

Despite having played for a Steelers side (the Bietigheim Steelers in the Bundesliga), Jaakko knows where he stands in relation to the team from over the hill:

Ben: You know that any team from Sheffield are the enemy?
Jaakko: Yeah, I hate them too!
Ben: That’s the right answer, my friend.

Jaakko might just be set to take the EPL by storm and, from the sounds of his approach to the game and to the forthcoming season, it seems that he is on target to become a fan-favourite from an early stage.
